When you’re trying to figure out if you’re interested in a particular industry or position, you may be asked this question. First things first, let us identify what the question may take on. In general, it is a “shooter” question. The interviewer is simply going to ask you this question when it comes to your current company, the current job, or even the industry itself. Therefore, the question may seem like this:
Why are you interested in this job? The answer to this question can be broken down into two parts. With the first part of the answer, you’re identifying why you might be interested in the position. This question is very specific. For example, an interviewer may ask you: “Why are you interested in this project?” However, if you respond with a generic answer such as “I’m excited about the challenge” or “The financial rewards” then chances are you are not really interested in the position.
The second part of the answer is more related to your actual interest. Let’s say you have four friends that are also in the video game industry. When the interviewer asks you: “How did you learn about the company?” What you should respond with is: “I constantly check social media websites such as YouTube for new information about the company.” If you don’t already do this, make it a habit! Social media is a great way to stay informed about your company and industry.
Another common question asked in an interview can be: “How can we help your prospective employer in this effort?” Here, the interviewer is not asking you specifically about the position. Instead, you are responding to a statement made by the interviewer. As an example, if the interviewer says: “Your job will involve managing production,” your response should be: “That’s really exciting! I love managing production at my previous job and look forward to learning more about how we handle various production aspects on a daily basis here at Treehouse.”
When an interviewer asks you about your skills or past experience, your best answer is always: “I could probably work with your specified requirements and be happy to do so.” It does not matter whether this statement is true or false. As long as you are willing to do what is requested of you, your recruiter should be happy with your answer.
An example answer works wonders when an interviewer asks you about something that directly pertains to your future job. Let’s say, for example, that you are currently interviewing for a customer service position. Your interviewer states that he wants to see examples of support you provided in the past. “We need someone who can effectively handle customer service issues so that our customers can stay satisfied with our products or services,” he explains. Your example answer is: “That’s one of my favorite things about working here. The customers are always getting great service.”
As you can see, example answers work wonders when answering questions pertaining to hiring. In addition, it’s one of the best answers to give when the interviewer asks you if you are interested in the job. You don’t have to give a lot of specific information about yourself, but simply stating your personal preferences is fine. For example, if you are applying to be a customer service rep, your best answers will be something along the lines of: “I love interacting with customers and providing customer service and would enjoy working in a fast-paced environment where I could use my communication skills to help solve customers’ problems.”
When asked about your past experiences, make sure you don’t say anything that could be interpreted negatively. For example, if the hiring manager says: “You seem like a good trouble-shooter. What do you do?” your example answer should be something along the lines of: “Occasionally being a trouble-shooter does not translate into trouble-free living, however, and I plan on making myself useful at whatever position.”
