Good morning McKinney!

Did you now McKinney has been designated by both the U.S. Senate and the State of Texas as America’s Crape Myrtle City?

The Crape Myrtle Trails of McKinney Foundation was founded in the mid-1990s by famed local gardener Neil Sperry with the goal to beautify McKinney and to give back to this community. Since its inception, CMTs has planted thousands of Crape Myrtle trees across our town, “If looking down from a hot air balloon, the blooming Crape Myrtles look like colorful ribbons woven throughout McKinney,” Board Member and 2014 Crape Myrtle Run & Festival Co-Chair Susan Shuttleworth explained to me. What a beautiful sight!

Each year, the Crape Myrtle Trails hosts their  Crape Myrtle Run & Festival—funded in part by the McKinney Community Development Corporation—as their primary fund raiser for the entire year. Unlike other foundations, 100% of the NET profit from this fundraiser goes back into the community. This year’s run takes place on September 28 from 7AM-11AM. And yes, this is the BEST way to kick off Oktoberfest!

If you have never attended, you will find the Crape Myrtle Trails festivities in the north east parking lot of Boyd High School. McKinney citizens [we hope to reach runners and families from all over the U.S., not just McKinney. That’s an MCDC requirement.] of all ages are invited to participate in the flat & very fast USATF-Certified 10K, 5K or timed 1-mile fun run—perfect for experienced and novice runners alike. Y’all this is something the entire family can enjoy doing together! REGISTER HERE

Friends, this is such a fun way to support a wonderful foundation completely dedicated to maintaining the beauty of McKinney as well as supporting our local schools and students.

Did you know? The Crape Myrtle Trails has sent an estimated 25,000 baby Crape Myrtle trees home with McKinney 5th graders over the years for the Mother’s Day Project? Is that not amazing? I love that all McKinney students, regardless the financial situation in their homes, are given the opportunity to give and to honor their mothers.

Did you know? The Crape Myrtle Trails planted a World Collection Park? This 7-acre park is located at Stacy and Alma and holds every known variety of Crape Myrtle tree in existence. It hosts visitors from all over the world and often serves as a backdrop for photoshoots and picnics. Definitely go check it out!
